EXPEDITION 2018 - outpost north

Ireland Experience 2018

Church In Stones - Druid's Altar
Drombeg Stone Circle - Glandore, Co. Cork
(R 597)

Drombeg is one of the finest recumbent stone circles built in Cork / Kerry region in the later Bronze Age period.
A small car park, an even smaller but short way to the place where long ago "something" happened.
You will experience a special atmosphere walking around this place - especially when its foggy or grey skies dominate the hour. No kidding.

What a name for a place ! On our way from Cork to Skibbereen lots of nice, empty beaches and lakes were to discover.

Long Strand - Castlefreke

On our way from Cork to Skibbereen lots of nice, empty beaches and lakes were to discover. Long Strand is a very popular area within the amateur & professional surfer community.

Lough Hyne (this photo)

Only a few to name here.

Lough Hyne seems to be a favourite place to take a bath - treated by encouraged folks like an Irish Indoor pool, although it is Atlantic with temperatures around 12 Celsius.
Once just made of fresh water the salty atlantic took over a long time ago. It is Ireland's first Marine Nature Reserve (1981).

Glengarriff - Bamboo Park

An amazing view to the sea and the island we were looking for.
The modern areas of the park were created in 1999 and offer a huge range of plants like bamboos, palm trees and tree ferns. But to be honest: it was a bit disappointing to that time because probably visitors expect more or other things.

Promised as an Italian Style Paradise with lots of exotic plants Ilnacullin (Garinish Island) was waiting.

So let us dive in.
Trust The Ferryman
Glengarriff - Bantry, Co. Cork

An amazing view to the sea and the island we were heading to. Promised as an Italian Mansion Style Paradise with lots of exotic plants Ilnacullin (Garinish Island) was waiting.

So boarding was easy and soon we discovered seals on our way, living their lives in peace.
Harbour Queen
Glengarriff - Bantry, Co. Cork

Public Transportation - Boarding Completed.
Garinish Island is just a 20 minute passage with the "Harbour Queen" - no worries.
This is only one of the chances you can take to get over but all other ferries are also regarded as "interesting", i.e. Blue Pool Ferry.

Home For A Hero
Derrynane House - Iveragh Peninsula, Co. Kerry

On our way to Waterville you can find "Lost Places" hidden more or less behind narrow roads and spooky ways.
There is still life in it.

Derrynane, the Oakwood of St Fionán, stands at the very tip of the Iveragh Peninsula in Co. Kerry. Sheltered within the woodland stands Derrynane House, the ancestral home of Daniel O’Connell, lawyer, politician and statesman, and one of the great figures in modern Irish history.
Sea On Both Sides
Waterville - Ring of Kerry - Iveragh Peninsula
(N 70)

The promenade appears to be endless for walking and countering strong winds. And it was recently one of the villages in that area where actors and staff from the Star Wars Sequels loved to eat, sleep and relax.

Charles Chaplin and his family discovered Waterville in 1959, returned every year since then for holidays and alongside the promenade he was honours with a statue made of solid bronze and the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival (since 2011).

May The 4th
Portmagee - Ring Of Kerry

Another breathtaking area within the Ring Of Kerry is Portmagee, a really sleepy small dot in the landscape, but an important one!
First of all it is the harbour where you can book transport to Skellig Michael whenever wheather and the Irish government give permission.
Actors and staff of Star Wars (Sequels) fell in love and spend a long time together with people there.
On May 4th every year Star Wars fans meet and celebrate the magic of it.

And there is also a little bit of traditional fishing industry around - not that much.

Finally you can reach Valentia Island and Kerry Cliffs within footwalk - amazing places to be and enjoy what nature made as art.

The photo shows reconstructed flats of monks once lived on Skellig Michael. I missed the chance to visit Skellig Michael because season for transport was not open to that time. I'll have to return obviously to prove myself of not being too afraid of heights in connection with really strong winds and no shelter at all.
We will see.
